Creating a Custom Firewall Rule
Creating a custom rule for software programs that need special requirements for accessing the Internet is easy.
Here's how:
- Right-click your Shaw Secure icon and select Open Shaw Secure.
- Click the Internet Shield button.
- Click Advanced.
- Select the Firewall category within the Internet Shield category.
- Click the Rules tab.
- Click Add.
This will open the Firewall Rule Wizard window. - Type the desired name in the Rule name box.
- Select the Allow or Deny option that is most appropriate for the rule you are creating.
- Click Next.
- If your rule will apply to the entire Internet, select the Any IP Address checkbox.
If your rule will apply only to a specific IP Address, click Edit.
Add the specified information to the list for your rule. Choices include DNS name, IP address, IP range and Subnet.
Note: If you are not sure about the requirements to create a rule, contact the software vendor. Improper creation of a rule could leave your computer vulnerable to outside attack, or affect your Internet connection.
- Click Ok.
- Click Next.
- Select the services required by your new rule.
- In the Direction column, click on the icons to set the direction for your rule. Choices are illustrated from top to bottom as Outbound, Inbound, and 2-way.
Note: If you are not sure about the requirements to create a rule, contact the software vendor. Improper creation of a rule could leave your computer vulnerable to outside attack, or affect your Internet connection. - Click Next.
- Select your desired alert type for this new rule. Choices are No alert, Log, and Log and Pop-up.
- Type any text message you'd like displayed in the Alert text box.
- Click Next.
- A summary of your custom rule for a specific application will be displayed. We recommend you compare the settings to the documentation supplied by the software vendor.
- When satisfied that the settings are correct, click Finish.
- Click Close to close Shaw Secure .
